Researchers at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have discovered a type of attack called PACMAN that takes advantage of a hardware vulnerability in Apple’s M1 series chips. The new attack could theoretically allow attackers full access to the core of the host operating system. informs Tom’s Hardware Portal.

Using the detected method, hackers can take full control of the system without leaving a trace through a combination of software and hardware attacks. Unlike previous flaws found in the software of the M1 chip, this one uses a hardware mechanism.

Due to the physical vulnerability, no software patch can fix the breach in the system. Also, the problem may apply to other ARM processors, including the new M2 chip, which has not yet been tested by MIT.

CSAIL has notified Apple of the discovered vulnerability. More information will be announced on June 18 at the International Computer Architecture Symposium.
