Indian authorities plan to increase the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology for better weather forecasting as the country suffers from an increasing number of droughts, floods and other climate-related disasters. This was reported by Agency Reuters cited representatives of the Indian government’s Meteorological Department (IMD).
IMD expects AI-based climate models to help predict weather changes better and faster, especially for a state that has a population of 1.4 billion and is the world’s second largest country in terms of rice, wheat and sugar production.
The agency also plans to increase the number of weather stations to collect data at the level of individual villages and use that information to train neural networks.
Due to climate change, heavy downpours, floods and extreme heat waves have become more frequent in India in recent years. According to India’s independent Center for Science and Environment, around 3,000 people will fall victim to hazardous weather conditions in 2023.
