Privateer, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s startup, developed the Pono space module for common commercial use. This would eliminate the need for companies to launch their own spacecraft, thus reducing the amount of space debris, representatives told Privateer. portal Space.com.

“Just as we try to minimize the use of single-use plastic, we also want to minimize the number of single-use satellites. We don’t have recyclable satellites yet. But together with Pono, we have developed a model that can make satellites reusable,” said Moriba Jha, Privateer’s chief scientist.

According to the scientist, Pono can become a space analogue of Uber and other services based on sharing any assets.

The Pono module is equipped with a powerful peripheral computer that supports advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. It is capable of observing the Earth, assessing orbital collision risk, and performing evasive maneuvers. Another application of the device is to collect data on orbital traffic and create a map of routes in near-Earth space.

The first Pono device entered orbit on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on December 1.
