Arion Kurtaj, an 18-year-old autistic hacker from England, was sentenced to indefinite compulsory treatment in a psychiatric hospital after hacking Rockstar Games and publishing images from an early version of GTA 6. reports BBC broadcast.
Kurtaj was the leader of the hacker group called Lapsus$. Under his leadership, cybercriminals attacked a number of IT companies. At least Nvidia and Uber were affected, as well as game developer Rockstar Games. In total, companies suffered losses of approximately $10 million from the actions of hackers. Kurtaj was under 18 years of age at the time of the crimes.
The judge said Kurtaj’s skills and desire to commit cybercrime meant he continued to pose a danger to the public. The criminal will remain in the hospital for life unless doctors disturb him later.
Doctors stated that Kurtaj was unfit to stand trial due to his acute autism, so jurors were asked to determine, without evidence, whether there was criminal intent behind his actions. A mental health evaluation used at his sentencing hearing found that he “continues to express his intention to return to cybercrime as soon as possible.”
During the investigation, it was revealed that Kurtaj had hacked Rockstar Games while he was under investigation for hacking Nvidia. Although the laptop was seized, Kurtaj managed to hack the game developer using his Amazon Firestick, hotel television and mobile phone.
