Google and other IT giants form coalition to fight for digital freedoms

Google Corporation, together with Meta (recognized as extremist and banned in Russia), Platforms (recognized as extremist and banned in Russia), microchip manufacturer Qualcomm, and seven other major technology companies, announced the formation of the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE) . . In addition to the above organizations, CODE also includes Chinese digital device and telecommunications equipment manufacturers Lenovo and Honor, American company Motorola, British electronics manufacturer Nothing, Norwegian IT company Opera, German messaging service provider Wire and French augmented reality startup Lynx.

The coalition said it would work with scientists, policymakers and other organizations on digital openness issues in Europe. The association hopes to create harmonious and open systems through cross-sector collaboration.

The emergence of CODE is associated with the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). It requires tech giants to make their platforms and services available to third parties and developers. For example, the DMA is expected to require Apple to allow users to install and download programs on their devices from other app stores, as well as allow the use of alternative payment systems other than Apple Pay.
