During Black Friday, which will take place on November 24, the number of DDoS attacks against online stores and marketplaces in Russia will increase by at least 30-40% compared to last year. Ramil Khantemirov, CEO of StormWall, a company specializing in blocking DDoS attacks, shared this prediction with socialbites.ca.

According to Khantemirov, growth is now observed in anticipation of sales. This year, unlike 2022, the number of incidents behind politically motivated hacktivists has decreased, while the share of attacks by traditional, financially motivated cybercriminals has increased.

“The main reason for attacks on retail is hackers’ desire to make a profit and get rich. They launch attacks on retailers to blackmail them in exchange for stopping DDoS. Often hackers attack small online stores because they do not have normal protection and cannot repel attacks, the expert said.

He added that retail is a vulnerable target for DDoS during Black Friday. The sales season is a period when income increases for businessmen. Hackers are taking advantage of this and demanding huge profits. Khantimirov could not name the denomination of these amounts.

“During this period, it is very important for retailers that their online stores are accessible to customers and always operational,” he said.

Khantimirov also explained that retailers are now affected by the increase in the number of DDoS attacks. According to the expert, some businessmen organize DDoS attacks on their competitors to gain more customers.
