Apple continues to face challenges as it tries to develop a custom 5G modem to replace Qualcomm components in its iPhone and other products. In this respect reports Well-known insider and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

In 2019, Apple acquired most of Intel’s modem business and began serious efforts to develop its own hardware, but the project ran into some setbacks. Gurman said Apple is still “years away” from creating a chip that performs as well as or better than rival Qualcomm chips.

The Cupertino company originally wanted to have its modem chip ready for launch by 2024, but that goal wasn’t met, and now Gurman says it will miss Apple’s extended spring 2025 launch schedule as well. For now, the launch of the modem chip has been postponed to late 2025 or early 2026. However, Apple still plans to include this technology in the new version of the cheap iPhone SE.

Apple is said to be in the early stages of modem chip development and “may be years behind competitors.” A version in development does not support the faster mmWave technology, and Apple also had issues with the Intel code it runs.

An Apple employee allegedly told Gurman, “Why we took a failed project from Intel and thought we could somehow succeed remains a mystery.”

Apple’s hardware technology team is reportedly “spread out” across multiple projects, causing difficulties in fixing bugs.
