Apple originally made the Apple Watch Ultra with a dark ceramic back, but decided not to release it for some reasons. In this respect reports MacRumors quotes photos released by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Before companies that make tech products can launch a new device, they must submit it to the FCC for certification, as Apple did with the Apple Watch Ultra ahead of its September 2022 release. At the same time, Apple submitted a prototype watch to the FCC with a darker, almost black ceramic back cover and a non-recessed plastic Action Button. Both of these features disappeared from the device with the release.
Apple currently offers the Apple Watch Ultra 2, which will be released in September 2023, in the same natural titanium color as the first-generation model. There were rumors before the launch that Apple might launch a new, darker colored variant for the previous model, which was tested but later cancelled.
It is not reported for what reason Apple refuses to release a dark version of the watch in each generation.
