Commenting on the attempt to “download” foreign online games to Russia, State Duma deputy Anton Gorelkin said that he doubted its effectiveness and suggested discussing the law, including game publishers in friendly countries. He expressed this opinion RIA News.

Earlier, Kommersant newspaper wrote that the Russian government began discussing an attempt to “download” foreign online games to the Russian Federation. A bill is being prepared that will oblige game developers to open representative offices in the Russian Federation and transfer server infrastructure.

“I am not sure that such an approach would be effective in the current geopolitical conditions: this initiative could face the same difficulties as the ‘law of extraction,’” says Gorelkin.

In his view, options need to be discussed with expert associations and game publishers in friendly countries.

The MP added that we need to seriously consider developing the market for domestic multiplayer gaming platforms, unlike Western platforms.
