The Explicit or Inappropriate Content Warning feature, first introduced in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and watchOS 10, allows users to protect themselves from unwanted images that may be sent to them accidentally or for harassment purposes.
Previously, this feature only worked for nude photos and videos received via AirDrop or the Messages app, and contact cards in the Phone app. Now users can protect themselves from obscene stickers in iMessage and images in the Contacts app.
To recognize intimate content, machine learning technology is used that runs on the device itself without transferring data to Apple clouds. The user sees such images as blurry and can decide whether he wants to open or delete them.
The Explicit or Inappropriate Content Warning feature is disabled by default and can be enabled under Privacy & Security in Settings.
