Apple has released macOS Sonoma 14.1, which allows select MacBooks and iMacs to now detect liquid in their USB-C ports. In this respect reports edition 9to5Mac.

The new macOS module is called liquid detection. From its description, it appears that it can detect the presence of liquid and signs of corrosion in all USB-C connectors. A similar option is already available on iOS. At the physical level, the module is a component inside devices that turns red when wet and transmits the necessary information to the operating system.

9to5Mac writes that Apple itself needed this system, first of all, so that service center employees could quickly determine whether the iMac or MacBook was exposed to moisture. Based on this, the publication concludes that Apple cannot connect the new module to the notification system.

In contrast, iPhone and iPad have an alert mechanism. If liquid is detected in the connector, iOS recommends that you disconnect your smartphone or tablet from the power cord immediately to avoid serious damage.

9to5Mac also noted that it is currently unclear which iMac and MacBook models have the sensors in question. Journalists suggest that this feature is typical only for new devices running M3 series processors.
