At the end of the third quarter of 2023, a decrease in the number of DDoS attacks was recorded in Russia, despite the ongoing special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine. socialbites.ca was informed about this by StormWall, a company specializing in information security.

“Russia is still among the top 10 most attacked countries in the world in the third quarter of this year, but a downward trend can be seen in the number of attacks on Russian companies. StormWall said, “While Russia ranked 8th in the list of the world’s most attacked countries in the second quarter of 2023, our country has now dropped two places and ranked 10th.”

The Russian Federation has been regularly included in the short list of countries most subject to cyber attacks since February 2022. DDoS attacks are one of the most accessible and effective tools at the disposal of hacktivists, i.e. cybercriminals, who act primarily for political and ideological reasons.

China, India and the USA took the first three places in this ranking. These countries accounted for 14.8%, 14.3% and 12.6% of the total DDoS attacks, respectively. While China, India and the United States have traditionally been the most targeted countries for several years, analysts have recently noticed high hacker interest in Europe and the Middle East.

According to StormWall experts, the number of incidents in EU countries in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 83% compared to last year. A similar trend is observed in Middle Eastern countries. A particularly large increase (78%) was recorded in the UAE. Analysts attribute the increase in the number of DDoS attacks in the EU primarily to the political situation, and in the Middle East to the active expansion in this region of Russian companies looking for promising new markets to do business.

“Hacktivists are trying to prevent Russian companies from developing business in the Middle East with the help of DDoS attacks. In addition, traditional criminals have become more active in the region and see growing business in the UAE as a new opportunity for blackmail and extortion,” StormWall said.
