Since 2020, Apple has been using a new system to mark iPhone screens with microscopic QR codes, which helps reduce the level of defects. In this respect reports Information broadcast.

According to the source, Apple spent several million dollars to develop and implement two QR codes applied to the iPhone screen at different stages of production. This allows the company to trace the source of faulty components and protect itself from unscrupulous suppliers.

Chinese display component manufacturers, represented by Lens Technology and Biel Crystal, are said to have supplied Apple with a very high percentage of defective parts – up to 30% of the products were recycled, costing the company hundreds of millions of dollars. After Apple implemented screen labeling, the defect rate dropped to 10%.

One of the QR codes is the size of a grain of sand and is a series of 625 dots created by laser engraving. Its location on the screen varies depending on the device model. This QR code is used to track the actions of unscrupulous suppliers who may replace or counterfeit components.

Another QR code, about the size of a pen tip, is applied at another point in production, allowing Apple to determine which supplier sent the faulty component. It may also contain more information that allows you to identify not only the manufacturer but also the batch number in which the defective product was found.
