Attackers modify standard quadcopters, allowing them to sneak into prisons undetected and deliver various prohibited items there. Vladimir Kleshnin, head of business development for Kaspersky Antidrone at Kaspersky Lab, mentioned this in an interview with socialbites.ca.

“The intruders are using modified drones to deliver various banned substances to the territory of correctional facilities. Phone, money, drugs, etc. There are still many such incidents,” said Kleshnin.

The expert explained that the drone modification can be software or hardware. As a rule, the parts responsible for the range of the radio channel through which commands from the operator’s control panel are transmitted are subject to change. Quadcopter tuning is done not only by attackers, but also by casual enthusiasts.

“Changing or expanding the radio frequency range allows you to reduce the effect of interference from the same routers; Usually Wi-Fi and drones run on the same 2.4 GHz frequency by default. Of course, seasoned attackers also exploit various flaws in their software to make drones less visible on radio,” Kleshnin added.
