Android 14 will have a satellite communications feature that will work through the proprietary Google Messages messaging app. In this respect informs SamMobile portal with link to developer Neil Rahmouni.
An enthusiast studied the Android beta code and found that the innovation will allow users to exchange text messages via the Garmin satellite system when cellular coverage is not available. For this, the built-in Google Messages application called “Messages” will be used on devices localized to Russian.
Garmin is working with Iridium, which maintains its low-Earth orbit satellite network. If this information is confirmed, the satellite functionality will be available in more than 150 countries worldwide following the official launch of Android 14 and compatible devices. The cost of the service has not yet been disclosed.
Apple has previously introduced a similar functionality to its smartphones. But in the application “Emergency call – SOS via satellite” on the iPhone 14 works only in 14 countries of the world.
