Hackers hacked a popular service for learning English

The database of 2.6 million users of English language learning service DuoLingo has been re-sold on hacker forum Breached. In this respect informs Edition of Bleeping Computer.

Information about DuoLingo users first surfaced on the dark web in January 2023. It was posted on the old version of the Breached forum and was sold for 1.5 thousand dollars (about 142 thousand rubles at the exchange rate of August 24, 2023). Later, the hacker resource was shut down and the archive removed from access. However, on August 21, 2023, the database went up for sale again. Published on the updated Breached forum for only $2.13 (about 200 rubles).

The archive contains users’ real names, usernames, and email addresses. Bleeping Computer believes that the leaked information could be used in attacks against DuoLingo users using social engineering.

As of press date, DuoLingo has not commented on the incident.
