In the first half of 2023, the total number of DDoS attacks against Russian companies increased by 23% compared to the same period last year. This was reported to socialbites.ca in the press service of StormWall, a company specializing in information security.
The largest increase in incidents was seen in the public sector. Experts found that the number of attacks on government institutions increased by 104% year over year. There was also a noticeable increase in attacks on the energy sector (63%) and the oil sector (48%). The increase in attacks against financial institutions was 42%, the increase in entertainment sector – 38%, cultural institutions – 26%, transportation companies – 18% and retail sales – 14%.
At the same time, finance became the most attacked area – this sector accounted for the largest share of total incidents (28%). Telecommunications companies are in second place (21%). The top three were closed by the public with a score of 16%.
The busiest months are January, March and May. Of the total number of attacks, 14% took place in January, 18% in March and 23% in May. Attackers used multi-vector DDoS attacks and also launched DDoS to cover up sophisticated targeted attacks.
