Scientists at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) analyzed the straps on the Apple Watch and other wearable devices and found various dangerous bacteria on the accessories in 95% of cases. Research result published in the journal Advances in Infectious Diseases.
The most common type of bacteria was staphylococcus aureus, which can cause staph infection. This type of bacteria was found in 85% of the wristbands by scientists. The scientists rated this result as “expected”. They encountered a common Escherichia coli E. Coli strain in 60% of cases.
At the same time, the researchers were surprised to find the more dangerous bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, on 30% of the wristbands. The germ can cause pneumonia, blood poisoning and other difficult-to-treat diseases.
The dirtiest bracelets were found in people who just got out of the gym. Scientists noted that this fact once again emphasizes the need for cleaning accessories after sports.
We also found that fabric, rubber, and silicone straps harbored the highest levels of bacteria. These are followed by leather products. Metal bracelets, on the other hand, collect very little bacteria. Probably because they are not usually worn during training.
