According to the newspaper’s report, space satellites in Earth orbit may be completely vulnerable to hacker attacks. “News”.

In other words, according to a study by Johannes Wilbold, a graduate student at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, a significant portion of satellites can be captured remotely by hackers. After examining three types of spacecraft, Wilbold concluded that most of them lacked the most basic of safety systems. In this regard, the scientist called for encryption and authentication of expensive satellites.

Sergey Semenov, director of IT company Init, told the publication that many spacecraft run on older operating systems and also have limited software update capability. These factors make satellites vulnerable to hacker attacks.

Roman Sychev, head of the network technology department at Angara Security, believes communication is the most vulnerable in any spacecraft because the signal is the easiest to intercept. At the same time, such an intervention is not difficult for a hacker. Therefore, in case of decoding and decoding of a signal transmitted over a radio frequency, it is possible to gain access to all information, as well as to control over the satellite.

Sergey Polunin, head of the infrastructure IT solutions protection group at Gazinformservice, said that a hacker who took control of a satellite could easily steal it. Or the spacecraft could be forced to transmit false information. At the same time, the owners of the satellite will not even immediately understand what it is. Polunin noted that due to the extremely high cost of the satellite, losing control of the spacecraft as a result of a hacker attack would lead to huge financial losses.

Experts interviewed by the newspaper believe that a number of measures should be implemented for the cybersecurity of satellites, including specifically updating the software, using modern encryption methods, introducing multi-level authentication systems, and ensuring the physical security of the spacecraft.
