After a long legal battle that began in 2017, Apple is approaching compensation for iPhone slowdowns with obsolete batteries. The company agreed to enter into a settlement agreement, under which it pledged to pay between $310 and $500 million to the participants in the court, informs Mercury News.
The lawsuit was filed after it was learned that Apple intentionally slowed down iPhone performance after updating smartphones to iOS 10. The company argued that this is necessary to prevent accidental shutdown of devices with a bad battery. However, many users saw it as a planned obsolescence that encouraged the purchase of new devices.
The deal will apply to first-generation iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus and iPhone SE owners who applied for compensation before October 2020. According to some reports, the total number of victims was 3 million people. Each can expect to receive about $65 in compensation.
The two owners of the old iPhones disagreed over the amount of compensation under the settlement agreement, but the ninth U.S. District Court dismissed their appeal. This means that Apple may start the payment process soon.
