Printer owners warn of danger of data leak

Canon printers and scanners may store and pass on to third parties the personal data of their owners obtained when printing and copying documents. In this respect informs The Washington Post (WP) edition references the company’s privacy policy text.

Canon’s privacy policy allows its devices to collect data for marketing purposes; this means that the company can share information about users with advertisers. In addition to the document content, Canon may in some cases also collect file metadata, which includes information about the location of the photograph or document taken.

Canon did not directly respond to WP’s questions about whether the company collects personal data, how long it stores it, and how it is used. The seller stated that it only respects the interests of customers and operates under federal and state laws.

Journalists could not find any data collection clauses in the HP privacy policy. However, they have been in user agreements for public print services like FedEx, UPS, and Staples.
