Researchers from Cambridge University (UK) have created a robot chef that learns recipes by watching videos of cooking various dishes. Related article published in the scientific journal IEEE Access.
The robot program is based on the so-called simulation machine learning method. The device looks at what a person is doing in the video and then tries to reproduce what it sees. Scientists explained that, as a rule, people also develop culinary skills according to the same scheme.
As part of the study, eight simple salad recipes were loaded into the robot. He was then shown clips of the preparation of these dishes. With hand gestures and ingredients, the machine determined the recipe and began to repeat the cooking steps. At the end of the experiment, the “cyber chef” was asked to create his own food.
Of the 16 videos watched, the robot correctly identified the recipe in 93% of cases. At the same time, the machine was able to recognize certain actions of a human cook in only 83% of cases.
The researchers noted that the robot cannot repeat the dishes of famous chefs, whose videos have often become popular on social networks. The problem is that the machine often cannot identify the fast human movements typical of the professional cutting of products. But scientists believe that as technology improves over time, the robot could learn to cook from YouTube.
