Home appliances with smart features can be used to spy on their owners. on this subject in conversation with Radio Sputnik said Sergey Vakulin, an information and computer security expert.
According to Vakulin, any home appliance with a camera, microphone and internet access can collect data about its owner and pass it on to third parties. Basically, such information is sent to the manufacturer to collect error data, but unscrupulous employees of the company can use them for their own purposes.
“For example, if your smart device has recognized or “saw” your bank card and all the details, including the number, expiration date, CVC code on the back, using the camera, the employee can destroy this information in his own way, especially sell it on the black market,” Vakulin warned.
The expert also talked about the cases where the owners of robot vacuum cleaners, some models of which have cameras to avoid various obstacles, are photographed from the side. When a smart gadget takes nude photos of its owner and post it on the internet.
“Cameras on smart devices can be sealed if you are worried about certain data or fear that unwanted photos will be taken. It’s not paranoia, it’s security,” concluded Vakulin.
