Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Asus introduced the ROG Ally handheld mini PC, which outperforms Valve’s main competitor, Steam Deck, in performance. In this respect informs Edition of Digital Trends.
The novelty received a compact body, which includes two sticks, a d-pad, four function buttons, as well as a double trigger and a double bumper. A 7-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz is responsible for displaying the image. As a computing unit, an eight-core AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme or AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor based on RDNA 3 technology is used, depending on the configuration, with 16 GB of RAM. There is a 256GB or 512GB module for installing games and storing user data, and a slot for Micro SD memory cards. A 40 Wh battery is responsible for the operation of the device without a power cord.
Judging by DigitalTrends and other media reviews, the new AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme-based Asus is significantly superior to Valve’s Steam Deck portable console in terms of performance. In other words, in Turbo mode, the Asus device plays games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring and Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 65, 33 and 77 FPS, respectively. By comparison, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 39 FPS on Steam Deck, 25 FPS on Elden Ring, and 57 FPS on Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
From the reviews of foreign journalists, it can be understood that the weak point of the Asus ROG Ally is the battery – its charge is enough for 2-4 hours of gameplay. The Windows 11 interface was also criticized – in the case of ROG Ally, you have to control the cursor with a stick, which, according to journalists, is very inconvenient.
ROG Ally will be available on June 16, with prices ranging from $600 to $700 depending on configuration.
