At least five journalists from Ecuador received letters containing flash drives filled with explosives, the sender of which is unknown. When Lenin Artiede from Ecuavisa TV channel connected it to his computer, one of them exploded, informs GIS News.
Police said the flash drive contained a 5-volt charge and was filled with RDX, a chemical commonly used by the military for detonators. When the journalist connected the device to the computer, the device exploded. Artiede suffered minor injuries to his hands and face.
The remaining USB sticks received by journalists were seized and destroyed by the police. It was noted that all flash drives were sent from different parts of Ecuador.
It is not yet known who and why attempted to assassinate journalists. Fundamedios, a non-governmental organization that advocates for media rights in Ecuador, demanded that the authorities conduct a thorough investigation and find those responsible.
