The Joe Biden administration demands that the Chinese company ByteDance sell its TikTok service or face a complete blockade in the country. It has been reported New York Times.
According to two newspaper sources close to the situation, sales requests were forwarded to TikTok management. The main concern of the US authorities is the risk of the personal data of US citizens being transferred in favor of a Chinese company.
Previously, the White House had sought to reach an agreement that would strengthen security measures regarding sensitive information in the app and that ByteDance could take its share. However, the New York Times notes that the sharp turn in sales demand and threats of blocking indicates that the Biden administration has tightened its approach to TikTok. A similar strategy has been followed in the past by former US President Donald Trump, who demanded that TikTok be sold to an American company or face face-blocking in the country.
TikTok said it was “disappointed with this requirement” and was looking for possible solutions to the problem. Meanwhile, according to TokTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan, the sale of the company will not resolve national security concerns, as Americans’ data is already well protected, and the ownership change “will not impose any new restrictions on information transfer.”
