The European Commission has ruled that Apple violated EU antitrust law by banning Spotify and other music services from advertising alternative payment methods for subscriptions in iOS apps. In this respect informs Edition of The Verge.
In this context, in the EU, Apple is threatened with a fine of 10% of the company’s global revenue for that year. Considering that Apple made $394.33 billion in 2022, the penalty could be $39.4 billion.
The European Commission investigation into Apple’s violation of antitrust laws in the music services market began in 2020. The current decision of the department is not final – Apple has been given the opportunity to prove its innocence.
“The European Commission today sent a clear signal that Apple’s anti-competitive behavior and unfair practices have been hurting consumers and disadvantaged developers for too long. We call on the European Commission to make a swift final decision to protect consumers and restore fair competition on the iOS platform.”
