Enthusiast Karl Buchka created a modern laptop based on the IBM ThinkPad 701C, released in 1995. In this respect informs PC World portal.
The original 1995 IBM ThinkPad 701C laptop differs from other devices in that it has a two-piece folding keyboard. It is equipped with Intel DX2 or DX4 processors, 4 to 40 MB of RAM, 720 MB of storage and a 10.4 inch display with a resolution of 640×480.
Being a fan of an unusual laptop, Buchka decided to replace the hardware inside so he could use it. To do this, the enthusiast replaced the motherboard, the processor with an Intel i7-1165G7, and also installed 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD in the laptop. The original screen has been replaced with an iPad 7 display with a resolution of 2160×1620.
It is noted that the updated IBM laptop now runs the Ubuntu operating system instead of the old Windows 3.11. However, enthusiasts have also built 2 USB Type-C and Type-A connectors, an Ethernet port and a 3.5mm audio output.
Bučka also replaced the lowercase letter on the ThinkPad 701C, which he himself printed on a 3D printer. At the same time, the folding keyboard remained operational.
According to the enthusiast, when the project is complete, he will post the necessary files and instructions on Github so that other IBM ThinkPad 701C fans can repeat the experiment.
