The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which includes companies like Apple, Google and Samsung, has announced a new Qi2 wireless charging standard. About informs Edition of The Verge.
The Qi2 differs from the standard of the first generation with its higher rated power. While the first Qi2-enabled accessories will only support the previous 15W, later charger and smartphone manufacturers will be able to exceed this limit.
In addition, Qi2 has developed the connectivity system, which is responsible for the position of smartphones, headphones and watches on charging platforms. The Qi2 uses more magnets, which allows devices to be closer to the chargers, thus reducing the chance of incorrect syncing.
Also, some kind of authentication system is integrated into the Qi2. In this way, manufacturers of smartphones and other devices that support wireless charging will be able to block uncertified accessories.
The first Qi2-enabled chargers are expected to hit the market in the summer of 2023. Smartphones with this technology will be released in the third or fourth quarter.
