The last days of director Ryan Coogler (Ryan Coogler) beats all records Ryan Coogler (Ryan Coogler). The film received a rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, 4.3 out of 5 on letterbox, previously unreachable for horrors, assessment of on cinemascore and collected $ 45.6 million in an American cash register, after collecting Minecraft in the cinema from the first place (a Minecraft film). “Sinners” is called the most successful original film of the decade. How justified is so much praise? Let’s sort it out.

The events of the “sinners” take place in the Mississippi of the 1930s. The plot revolves around a small but coherent community of Afro -Mamericans. The main characters are twin brothers with the criminal past Smok and Stack, who returned with a lot of money from Chicago and decided to open Juk-Joint-Liets between the casino and the bar. Michael Bakari Jordan plays both gangsters.
Smoke and cutting need good bluesmen to make the maximum WOW effect on the night of the discovery. As one of the musicians, they choose their cousin Sammy – the young son of a preacher, whose father does not approve the idea of a performance for the ‘sinners’. He warns Sammy that music, especially as mentally as a blues, attracts the devil. And it turns out to be right when a mysterious white man named Remmik arrives in the local regions.
Which of the previous films by Ryan Kugler did you watch?

The “sinners” have a lot in common with “from sunset to sunrise” (from twilight to dawn), including a similar structure. So the first half is a swing, acquaintance with the ensemble of Helden, immersion in the atmosphere. The second is a transformation in a horror explosion about a group of people who confront the horde of bloodthirsty vampires in a closed room.
The difference is that if “from sunset to sunrise” the tone to horror changes considerably, than in the “sinners” the transition is felt smoother. The first ‘calm’ part of the film influences the rather extensive social and cultural problems that the inhabitants of the black skin of the United States have encountered in those years. However, curiously does not forget the film all these difficult topics, not even in the second half, and that is why the work is felt very much.

In general, with comparisons with “from sunset to sunrise” it is worth being careful not to create false expectations. Yes, in the “sinners” there are enough bloody action, but the hunting on evil spirits here is far from the most important. Fighting with vampires does not cause half the tension that leads the scenes to the massacre.
Why like that? On the one hand, Ryan Kugler can be blamed because they have not brought any radically new ideas for the myths of vampires. Despite the presence of a woman in the team of the main characters, who have old African mystical knowledge, her methods to destroy leeches are reduced to the good old commitment, garlic and holy water. We have already seen all this.
On the other hand, the action scenes of the ‘sinners’ may not be in memory, not because they are not creative enough, but because other aspects of the film attract all the attention for themselves. The dialogues are perfectly painted and you can empathize with the heroes at the expense of beautiful acting. And I don’t only want Michael Bakari Jordan prizes, who brilliantly played different brothers, but generally the entire composition. Separately it is worth evaluating the performer of the role of Sammy Miles Caton, for whom this is generally debut work. And Jack O’Connell, who played the leader of the Ghouls, will undoubtedly appear in every ranking of the most charismatic villains in the future.

Moreover, the action in the ‘sinners’ in the background also fades because the viewer’s attention inevitably switches to symbolism and hidden meanings of multiple layers in each scene. To catch everything, it is unlikely that one view is sufficient. However, this is far from all ideas – some are served “in the forehead”. And the point is not in the subjects themselves, but in the fact that the authors do not always succeed in sharpening well. As a result, the viewer sometimes continues to be taken away from the pleasure of independent solving.
For example, attention is constantly focused on the importance of an intangible cultural heritage. The film always reminds us that it is music that unites society and enables you to fight against any form of assimilation. That is why the leader of the Ondoden pulls and first pulls her, and not just the blood. The idea is interesting, but it is too clear.
Nevertheless, even if the film sometimes sacrifices subtlety, so that the viewer does not miss the most important messages, to a number of complex topics, he approaches the necessary attention to the nuances. The lack of whites among the main characters and the fact that a white vampire is an opponent may, for example, seem at first sight a manifestation of reversed racism by the authors. But when the background of the Remmic and its motivation are finally revealed, the clear-alles is ambiguous. He has much more in common with the main characters than it seems, and this beam is a certificate of well -considered scenario work.

To name “Sinners” “the best original film of the decade”, possibly prematurely. Nevertheless, after looking it becomes clear why the tape causes a stir. I want to think about the film and his topics – to discuss what really can’t be said about every horror. The secret of success is partly that Ryan Kugler was able to get an unprecedented deal with Warner Bros. To close, in the context of which he retained full creative control over his film. If other visions follow his example, it is possible that this Hollywood will change forever, where the producers are already alarming, for fear of strengthening the influence of the makers.
