A joint project between scientists from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of Zurich has led to a revolutionary achievement in medicine: remote surgery over a distance of almost 10,000 km. In an experiment using a robotic system and a magnetic endoscope, a Swiss surgeon controlled the operation using a PlayStation 3 controller. The procedure was performed on a live pig, demonstrating the capabilities and accuracy of the new technology.

For real-time data transfer, the WebSocket protocol was used, which established a stable and fast connection between the control panel in Zurich and the control equipment in China. Thanks to a magnetic endoscope, in which several magnets are built, the surgeon was able to perform precise manipulations despite a considerable distance. During the operation, it was possible to perform a biopsy of tissue from the walls of the pig’s stomach, which emphasizes the high efficiency and safety of the method.

The 300 millisecond delay between the surgeon’s actions and their execution did not affect the accuracy and quality of the operation, which was a significant step forward in the field of remote medical interventions. This achievement opens up new perspectives for medicine, especially for the treatment of patients in remote and hard-to-reach areas where there is no access to qualified specialists.
