What comes to mind when someone mentions Saw? It depends on which parts you watched, but often: a bloody mess, a detective thriller with a complicated plot, or an explosive mix of both. Once again ‘Saw’ is a psychological drama about the despair of cancer patient John Kramer. To what extent can such a choice of subject matter be successful for the series? In short, it seems we’ll never know.
I want to play a game with you. Yes, I’m tired of it. I’m going on a vacation!
“Saw 10” talks about friendship, hope, mutual help. We’re still talking about a bloody mess, yes. But this is a movie about the “good” Kramer, who cares about others and will save the innocent. Quite unexpected. In addition, the maniac himself is going through difficult times. He is very close to death again and tries to grab his last hope to cure his cancer. Why should we worry? Apparently, answering the same question, the authors several times show the “positive sides” of John – he will even provide free help, which seems strange for a pragmatic engineer of “death machines.”
Kramer clings to the small chance of survival against the disease. For example, the hero’s entire environment at the beginning of the film looks like a one-man show. The problem is that the plot of the story is clear and long. Then the main characters emerge. Including the antagonist. Here he is so that you remember the “bad Russians” from movies and games of the 1990s – a stereotypical and obvious villain.
Which film from the top three do you think is the best?
The film rarely moves. Just two twists increase the pace of the story to a watchable level. And the first is revealed in the description of the film on all aggregators – here you can’t even say that it’s guessed: you don’t have to guess. But it is shown reverently, in the spirit of the classics. The rest of the time, the story fails to create emotional tension or interest in the characters because there is no chemistry between them. The antagonist acts according to the principle “I am very bad, I will do bad things”, and most of the remaining characters are simply spineless – you forget about them immediately after watching.
Traps. Bad toastmaster – and the competitions are boring
It’s still “Saw”! Of course, the traps themselves are an important part of each film in the series. This time there are a few symbolic ones and only one unusual one – but in fact the maniac never uses these. You will hardly see anything special or creative here. Gas, radiation, explosives, severed limbs, live dissection, broken joints, drowning – the standard package. A really cool trap is shown almost at the beginning. The images in the photo are not bad, by the way.
I want to be just like ‘that’ movie!
The new episode appeals to fans of the first parts. Therefore, many elements refer specifically to the original “Saw”. Includes the heartfelt speeches and moral teachings of John Kramer, an attempt to create a “wow” effect with powerful plot points, the return of Amanda, the “pig” assistant (the only interesting character, by the way) and much more . The new film features footage exactly recreated from the first part, for a nostalgic effect in the spirit of “oh, this is that scene!” If you’re a fan and missed a creepy doll riding around on a bike, you might enjoy clips like this.
However, what’s new in the ‘top ten’ drowns out the quotes and references to the original at the level of fanservice. The legendary scenes of the classic look bad against the background of mediocre characters and a slow plot with a drawn-out half-hour plot. The new part seems to parasitize the legacy of the first three. If we talk about unique moments, it seems that the creators wanted to evoke mixed emotions, perhaps empathy for the fate of a maniac, and again put forward a moral dilemma about justice. We tried to show new internal conflicts and talk about eternal topics. Well, all this did not work out: weak implementation and some kind of chaos got in the way – in “Saw” everyone plays by the rules, but here Kramer is not all-powerful. But it was not possible to make him a man.
Saw 10 is a film that is very difficult to find a place in. On the one hand, having fun and watching a trash movie with friends isn’t bad enough. On the other hand, you should certainly not postpone it until a weekend evening to see what is better. And this is a weak passer who can only play the “remember?” card, which has consequences for the fans. And only if you really miss James Wan’s classics.
What do you want to see more of in Saw?
