Recently was the world premiere of the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (Sonic the Hedgehog 2). Many have been waiting for the sequel of the story of the world’s fastest creature: favorite childhood hero Jim Carrey (Jim Carrey) as villain, a fun trailer. In the West, the film was well received – in terms of fees for the first weekend, the novelty became the highest-grossing film based on games. Unfortunately, there was no premiere in Russia. But is it worth worrying about? I appreciated Sonic’s adventures and I hasten to share my impressions!

What is Sonic 2 movie?
Sonic is a cult game character and in Russia he has a special disposition. In the 1990s, the main entertainment device in our region was the eight-bit Dendy, but among the 16-bit consoles, the SEGA Mega Drive led the way.
The platform’s main hit was the legendary Sonic the Hedgehog, which has sold 15 million copies. Not every advertised Sony exclusive is so different. In addition, in Russia, interest in the hero was sparked by the Sonic Super Hedgehog program – we talked about it in the article on gaming television.
Unfortunately, a lot has changed since then. SEGA consoles gave way to computers and the first PlayStation, and other heroes took over the minds of gamers. However, nostalgic memories of the adventures of a fast hedgehog have not disappeared from many.
When the rights holders decided to make a movie about Sonic, fans were thrilled. Admittedly, the community was mostly adults, because modern children have their own idols. The mediocre animated series “Sonic Boom” (Sonic Boom) and passing games like Sonic Forces wasn’t enough to make the Blue Hedgehog a childhood hero.
The problem with Sonic the Movie was that the movie was too childish and paid little attention to actual fans. In the film, of course, there were good jokes and funny action scenes, and the reworked image of the hero turned out to be worthy, but the definition of “passing” was the best for the release version. It was possible to have fun watching, but as soon as you left the cinema, the impressions faded.
In the second part, the authors decided to correct the mistakes of the original. They remembered gamers who once had a SEGA Mega Drive, throwing iconic characters like Tails and Knuckles into the film, and also working on humor and action. Did it get cool? Well, Sonic 2 can not be called a masterpiece, but the picture can please both fans and new viewers.

Story
At the end of the first part, the brave hedgehog, with the help of his friends, defeated Eggman aka Robotnik and sent the villain to the strange world of mushrooms. Since then, Sonic’s life has changed: he lives comfortably in the house of his best friends Tom and Maddie, and also secretly engages in various exploits. In his spare time, for example, he’s not averse to stopping robbers – it doesn’t matter if that destroys half the block.
However, Sonic does not lose heart and concludes the lessons of Tom, who repeats the truth about strength and responsibility in the mind of Uncle Ben. It seems that many good things await the hero, but problems ruin his plans.
One day, Eggman manages to escape from prison – with the help of Knuckles, an echidna with incredible strength. Both characters hate Sonic and dream of hanging out with him, but everything is not so simple. It turns out that the hedgehog is hiding the key to the location of the legendary artifact that can turn thoughts into reality. The villains desperately need this little thing.
Fortunately, another iconic character, Tails, gets Sonic out of trouble. Together, the heroes must find the artifact and prevent the villains from gaining great power.
The plot of the second part turned out to be banal, but it was presented with dignity. On the way, the heroes will have a lot of funny encounters: for example, one day they will have to look at Siberia, in the clutches of treacherous Russians who are ready to use animals instead of firewood. To delay the unfortunate fate can only be challenged to a dance fight. The episode turned out to be so ridiculous and cranberry that it’s not easy to keep from laughing.
Obvious plot twists don’t bother either. For example, anyone who has played at least one Sonic game or seen some sort of cartoon knows Knuckles. It’s not hard to guess what the rivalry between the hedgehog and the echidna will lead to, but it’s still fun to see their relationship.
Much of this is due to the characters. Knuckles isn’t a particularly smart ignoramus who is used to relying only on himself and resolving conflicts by force. That’s just thanks to the personal drama and moral trauma, his image seems interesting. Not surprisingly, a solo echidna movie is already in development.
The other characters are cool too. Tom is good as a friend and mentor, even his wife has a fine hour, and passions are seething, even between secondary characters.
Tails alone cannot be praised. The fox is beautifully drawn, but there is nothing interesting in his story. Plus, unlike Knuckles, there was only enough time to talk about the two-tailed’s ins and outs, not show it. The character can be called a glorious little and talented inventor – that’s all.
Plus special mention to Jim Carrey. Feeling like he’s grinning more than usual in “Sonic 2” but that’s his style. Eggman in the sequel occasionally makes faces, says nonsense, and creates nonsense in Ace Ventura’s mind. It was this kind of craziness that made the actor a name, but sometimes you expect depth and humanity from his character, and not just caricature.
But the image of Sonic has not changed much, but he will still surprise the Russian audience. The fact is that this time the main character is voiced by the famous blogger Dmitry Syenduk, who is actively invited to RuTube.
Rick and Morty’s voice is known for his love for the SEGA mascot – and now his dream has come true. It is unbearably disappointing that it is impossible to appreciate Syenduk’s efforts in Russian cinema. It remains to wait for a digital release and hope for dubbing.
In summary, the plot of “Sonic 2” leaves a pleasant impression. The plot outline may look familiar even to an inexperienced viewer, victories according to the worst traditions are achieved through the power of friendship, and skills occasionally work by new rules – but the story is still captivating.
Action
Compared to the original, the action in the second part has become more inventive. The authors are increasingly trying to reveal the possibilities of Sonic and to entertain the viewer.
If the first movie isn’t very memorable, then the sequel has plenty of episodes that will stick in your head for a long time. Sonic’s party with his beloved dog, graceful jumps on Eggman’s drones, dance fights with strange Russians – these moments turned out to be fun.
Unfortunately, the directors have never been able to come up with tricks that would rival Quicksilver’s heroism from the X-Men (X-Men). However, the current level of performance is enough to reveal the uniqueness of the protagonist. Due to speed and ingenuity, he always finds a way out of even the most difficult situations and never loses his sense of humor.
In addition, “Sonic 2 in the cinema” is perfectly drawn. The characters look realistic, their facial expressions are convincing, and live actors handle them skillfully. At some point you can forget that the characters are not real.
In general, if you were expecting a fun action sequence from the sequel, you won’t be disappointed: something incendiary happens all the time. The film only collapses at times when the director focuses on live actors without superpowers and heroic skills, and the final battle proved too formal. Other than that, there are no complaints about the production.
It’s not worth mourning the removal of Sonic 2 from the rental – there’s nothing special about the movie. However, a light-hearted story, sensible humor and good action manage to amuse and cheer – now much of this is not enough.
