A few weeks ago, the world premiere of the movie “Morbius” (Morbius) took place. There were no screenings in Russia – probably the reason was the low quality of the film. But can a movie with Jared Leto, vampires, and Spider-Man references really be bad? I appreciated the photo and rushed to share my impressions!

What is “Morbius”?
Jared Leto is an excellent man. His music has been collecting stadiums for over 20 years and his acting skills have been awarded an Oscar. “Requiem for a Dream”, “Fight Club” (Fight Club), “Blade Runner 2049” (Blade Runner 2049), brilliant “Mr. Nobody” (Mr. Nobody) – Leto has a large number of memorable roles.

However, the actor also made mistakes when choosing a movie. For example, in “The Outsider” (The Outsider) and “The Devil in the Details” (The Little Things), there was nothing remarkable at all. However, the permission to film “Morbius” cannot seem wrong to anyone.
Jared got the part of a charismatic vampire who brutally murdered people more than once in the comics, but then still found his way into the light. Many know him from the cult animated series about Spider-Man, where the vampire was remembered as an antihero – many did not like his actions, but in the end Morbius always sided with the good guys.
Unfortunately, shooting the solo film failed – the picture ended up in production hell. Initially set to premiere in 2020, creative differences, a pandemic, and other issues kept getting in the way.

Fortunately, the studio bosses still finished the film – but how did it end? Well, if there were any screenings in Russia, I wouldn’t recommend buying a ticket for the session.

The plot of Morbius
Michael Morbius suffered from something rare and unknown since childhood. The child was weak and could not walk normally, and to live he needed several blood transfusions daily. However, despite the difficulties, Michael was distinguished by an excellent spirit and believed that in the future he could find a cure – for the sake of himself and other sick children.

Time passed and Morbius became a brilliant doctor. He even invented artificial blood, which saved millions of lives and became the reason for the Nobel Prize. That is just before the solution to the problem with his illness is still a long way off. To find a cure, the doctor started testing vampire bats — their DNA could overcome the disease.
In the end, everything almost works out: An injection of a miraculous serum helped Morbius to his feet and even gave incredible abilities such as excellent strength, hearing and the ability to fly. However, there are a few nuances: in order to maintain a normal state, the hero must constantly drink blood – otherwise he will go mad and turn into a monster.

The plot of “Morbius” turned out to be curious. Crazy experiments, gloomy atmosphere, Michael’s first transformation into a monster that mercilessly kills eight people. All this is unusual for Marvel and Sony superhero movies – something similar was only in the series for Netflix.
In fact, after such a start, it’s strange that viewers around the world are reluctant to attend the sessions, and the reviews are mostly negative. Unfortunately, the plot remains the only bright spot of the plot – soon “Morbius” shows his true face, and it is not very pleasant to look at.
The script of the film is written in the worst traditions of superheroes from the time when the genre was just emerging: all the events are so flat and typical that you are amazed by it. It seems that the studios have long learned, if not to surprise, then to amuse, but “Morbius” is like a passing episode of the series “Sidaba”. For the middle of the seventh season of “Arrow” (Arrow) or “Flash» (The Flash), the story seems appropriate, but for a solo album on a big budget – no.

Morbius’ personal drama is built around the fact that artificial blood is slowly no longer working. One day the hero will either have to kill or accept death. Oddly enough, even in the buggy, but excellent Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines A vampire hero can eat people or just sneak into a clinic and steal donated blood. Such an idea, however, does not occur to the great physician.
The main villain is also full of claims. It is easy from the first minutes of the film to find out who will soon become an antagonist, and in the future the enemy does not surprise in any way – on the contrary, with each minute it only gets more upset. Theoretically, you can explain why he flew off the reels, but why on earth he became attached to Morbius is a big question. Whatever the villain does, it turns out to be some kind of nonsense.

In addition, it is felt that the film was mercilessly torn to shreds during editing. The number of trailer scenes that didn’t make the final cut is overwhelming. In addition, the authors spend an enormous amount of time on characters whose storylines lead to nothing.
The viewer is introduced to the police investigating the crimes of vampires – but for the entire film they do nothing significant. Morbius takes care of the sick girl for a long time, but in the middle of the film she is simply forgotten. The love line is revealed in a very strange way. The hero too suddenly learns new powers, and the world necessarily goes into slow-mo mode at this point.
As a result, the plot feels torn and banal. The viewer has already seen all this in dozens of paintings – while even in the Black Widow checkpoint the clichés are presented more talentedly.

Oddly enough, the acting deserves praise. Jared Leto, Matt Smith, known for his role as Doctor Who, Chernobyl star Jared Harris – they all sincerely try to play their part convincingly.
Leto and completely fell into the image of a vampire: his facial expressions, bewildered look and inner doubts complement the image of the character well. He didn’t have to radically change his appearance, as in the case of the role of Paolo for the House of Gucci, but Jared can do without it.
The problem is that talented artists have nothing to play. They can only get the most out of a lean script, but the efforts aren’t enough to make Morbius fit.

As a result, the plot does not leave any emotion. Only the scene after the credits is really entertaining – it reveals another facet of the multiverse and hints at an encounter with Spider-Man. Well, the Venom joke is pretty good too. Otherwise, the script looks like chewing gum, which has long lost its taste, but the authors force you to grind it until the film is over.
Action in Morbius
Unfortunately, the action can’t be called Morbius’ strong point either – it’s just as reasonable as the plot. There are few entertaining battles: minor conflicts happen, but there is nothing interesting about it, but only at the end is a really large-scale battle waiting.

However, the quality of the graphics varies. Sometimes vampires look really menacing, and in other episodes they seem to refer to the movies of the 1980s, when the budget was only enough for a novice makeup artist.
The battles are also full of complaints. The authors only mastered CGI combat, which is desperately lacking in ingenuity and understandable staging. The fights may not be as boring as in The Matrix Resurrections, but still nothing stands out.

As a result, the action does not become a convincing argument for paying attention to the film. It’s way too typical.
Morbius is a strange movie that came out of the joint production line of Marvel and Sony. Usually the authors come up with some tricks and fresh ideas for superhero movies, but this time the creativity was only enough for the eyeballs. Otherwise, there is nothing exciting about the novelty. Perhaps in the future the hero can become an important character for the multiverse, but the debut is clearly not a success. It’s certainly not worth lamenting Morbius’s absence at the box office – it’s better to go to Everything at Once (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
