The environment is tense and many doors are left open as tensions rise around the Dragon House. In the latter portion of the first part, Rhaenys travels to Dragonstone to warn Rhaenyra that Aegon faced betrayal after his coronation, and that threat extends to his children as well. “Dracarys!” is not shouted in triumph, but as a defensive reply. The plan is to stand firm rather than kneel, and after a sequence of misfortunes, Daemon heads toward the volcano where Vermithor rests. Vermithor, a dragon over a century old, bears scales described as bronze with cinnamon hues. But who exactly is this dragon that Daemon calls in High Valyrian, the same language spoken by the Targaryens? The answer appears in the Game of Thrones novels.
Who is Vermithor, the dragon
In the books by George R.R. Martin, Vermithor is identified as the second-largest dragon in the Seven Kingdoms after Vhagar, and he is ancient, surpassing a hundred years in age. Vermithor serves as the king’s personal dragon. He is linked to Jaehaerys, the first Targaryen king, and to Daemon’s grandfather, Viserys. After Vermithor’s death, dragonstone remains a place waiting for a rider to claim it. It is plausible that Daemon attempts to win the dragon’s attention to face the current war, though the series already indicates that Daemon is Rhaenyra’s husband and that Caraxes already exists as his mount. The question remains whether another tamer will sire a bond with Vermithor before Daemon can claim him for his own causes.
What the books say
According to the novels, Vermithor does not become bonded to Daemon, Rhaenyra, or their children early in the Dance of the Dragons. Instead, Hugh Hammerbastard, son of a blacksmith, rises as a dragonsrider during the conflict and aligns with the Blacks in their war against the Greens. Vermithor is described as less agile than some other dragons, yet his massive size and fearsome glare enable him to melt steel and stone. He is noted for a temperament that, while formidable, shows tolerance toward people who approach him with respect, unlike some of his more xenophobic peers.
