Avatar’s water-themed sequel opened with a strong weekend in Spain, amassing 7.3 million euros in its first three days. The performance marks the best domestic premiere since 2019 for a film released in theaters, according to Comscore Movies data reported this week.
Across Friday through Sunday, audiences in cinemas reached a total of 1.2 million, a figure that stands as the highest weekend attendance registered in 2022 for Spanish screens.
The all-time Spain premiere record still belongs to Avengers: Endgame, which earned 10.2 million euros in the same Friday-to-Sunday window back in April 2019.
This sequel, a follow-up to the blockbuster directed by James Cameron released thirteen years after the original, opened simultaneously across global markets and has driven a global box office tally of about 434.5 million dollars so far.
The film’s production budget has not been publicly disclosed, but estimates commonly place it somewhere between 250 and 400 million dollars. Cameron has indicated that surpassing two billion dollars in global theatrical revenue would be necessary for profitability on a worldwide scale.
Dating back to 2009, the first Avatar remains the top earner of all time, with approximately 2,922 million dollars in worldwide receipts. It is followed in the all-time rankings by Avengers: Endgame, which has secured about 2,797 million, with Titanic trailing at around 2,200 million, another Cameron-directed milestone in cinema history.
In Spain, Avatar’s original release already sits atop the historical podium for domestic grosses, highlighting a cumulative total near 79 million euros. It is followed by Eight Basque Surnames, with around 55 million, and The Impossible, which has accumulated roughly 42 million euros in the country.
