Auction Highlights: Michael Jackson Hat, Freddie Mercury Kimono and Diana Jumper

Michael Jackson’s iconic black felt hat drew strong bidding at Lemon Auction and Artp Ges, ultimately selling for 77,600 euros. The sale was reported by Pioneer, confirming the hat’s place in music history.

The item is connected to MJ’s famous moonwalk moment. During the televised Motown concert in 1983, he paused mid performance of Billie Jean, removed the hat, and tossed it behind the stage, a gesture that became part of pop culture lore.

Auction organizers had projected a price range of 60,000 to 100,000 euros for the Michael Jackson hat, but demand exceeded expectations and the final bid reached 77,600 euros.

In a separate sale at Sotheby’s, Freddie Mercury fans witnessed a red satin kimono linked to the Queen frontman fetch 70,000 US dollars. Mercury wore a traditional Japanese robe during the band’s 1976 summer tour, including a stop at the Playhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland. The purchase reflected Mercury’s long standing interest in Japanese culture during that tour, now celebrated as part of his broader music legacy.

The kimono was uncovered in a large travel bag stored in the attic of Mercury’s Garden Lodge residence in west London. An assessment of the collection revealed the item tucked away among belongings. Mercury had left his fortune, along with his home, to Mary Austin, described as the love of his life in his will, a detail that adds personal context to the finds from this period.

Earlier reports noted that Princess Diana’s jumper had reached a sale price of 1.14 million dollars, underscoring the enduring appeal of iconic fashion moments in royal history, though the exact timing and provenance of that sale vary by report.
