Experts from the French National Research Center for Agriculture, Nutrition and the Environment announced that for the first time in history they managed to grow white truffles artificially. This has been reported Guard.
Delicious mushrooms not previously grown artificially have been reproduced in the New Aquitaine region – the exact location of cultivation is kept secret. Scientists have grown 26 mushrooms.
It is noted that previously only black truffles were successfully grown – white ones did not succumb to artificial breeding. The experiment lasted two years.
“A significant increase in fungal numbers looks very promising. It confirms that the mushrooms take root well. When growing a black truffle, it often happens that several mushrooms grow, after which they actively multiply. White truffles seem to behave the same way, which is good news for future cultivation,” said mycologist and project leader Claude Mura.
White truffles are considered the most outstanding mushroom variety in gastronomy. The Guardian states that their costs could exceed £9,000 per kilogram.
