You can distinguish a real diamond from an imitation (e.g. cubic zirconia) by using breath or water. Elena Rakutina, jeweler and jewelry fashion expert at the SOKOLOV jewelry holding, told socialbites.ca.

“Diamond jewelery is considered a jewelery classic and is always in high demand. However, other inserts are generally considered natural diamonds. For example, cubic zirconia or moissanite,” warned the expert.

According to Rakutina, today there are analogues and imitations of natural diamonds that are difficult to distinguish even for experts armed with special optical equipment. However, popular methods to determine the authenticity of a diamond in daily life are using breath or water.

“The first method is based on the thermal conductivity of diamond: Just breathe on the stone. If it becomes covered with condensation after a few breaths, it means cubic zirconia or moissanite is present,” explained the expert.

He added that to verify the authenticity of a stone using water, you should put a drop on it.

“You need to drop a drop of water on the surface of the stone. Then you need to try to separate the drop with a needle or toothpick. If a drop breaks into smaller pieces, it is framed with cubic zirconia or moissanite,” said Rakutina.

The jeweler warned that these methods of checking a diamond cannot be called accurate: especially they will not help distinguish a synthesized diamond from a natural one. Only a certificate can provide absolute confidence in the origin of a precious stone.

“When buying a stone, be sure to ask for a certificate for the stone. Buy jewelry only from trusted stores and those with diamond certification,” concluded Rakutina.
