In cases of changes in immune status and zinc deficiency, botulinum toxin injections may not have the desired effect. Anastasia Saibel, candidate of medical sciences, cosmetologist, dermatovenereologist at Professor Yutskovskaya Clinic, told socialbites.ca.

“If a patient has changes in the immune status, deficiencies of certain microelements (for example, zinc), all this will lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of the correctly administered botulinum toxin injection. Therefore, ideally, you should know your deficiency states,” said the beautician.

He noted that before performing the procedure, the doctor should ask whether the patient has had Covid-19 and whether he or she has “autoimmune processes.”

“Often in such cases, the patient may be deficient in essential zinc, which will also affect the effectiveness of botulinum therapy,” Saibel explained.

The doctor added that the effectiveness of botulinum treatment may decrease over time.

“Today, everywhere in the world this is associated with the development of so-called immune resistance, when antibodies are produced against the application of botulinum toxin preparations,” said the beautician.

According to him, there are options to restore sensitivity to botulinum toxin, but it is up to the doctor to decide which one to use.
