On World Sight Day, October 12, ophthalmologist and microsurgeon Tatyana Shilova debunked five popular myths about eyes in a conversation with socialbites.ca.
According to the doctor, it is wrong to believe that electronic devices impair vision.
“Some dangerous radiation from smartphones and laptops, as well as other screens, is believed to damage the eyes. “Although the level of such radiation complies with the norms, otherwise these devices would not be available for sale,” he explained.
Tatyana Shilova recommended not setting the font too small and refusing to read the screen at high brightness and in complete darkness to avoid eye fatigue.
According to the doctor, glasses do not cause visual impairment.
“For some reason, many people, especially the older generation, think that if you start wearing glasses, your vision will no longer be saved, it will quickly deteriorate and it is better to wear glasses less often. But if you refuse to wear glasses, your vision will deteriorate in the same way – this is due to completely different factors. “True, as the eyes will be constantly tense, they will droop even faster, which will cause headaches,” he said.
Tatyana Shilova emphasized that gymnastics for the eyes is not as useful as they say:
“Gymnastics is really useful; It improves blood flow in the eye area and this helps get rid of dryness and also reduces muscle tension, which is good and even reduces the frequency of headaches. That is why, by the way, there is a feeling that vision is improving: the muscles relax, dryness disappears and the world begins to play with new colors. However, the causes of myopia or nearsightedness are much more complex and can only be eliminated by surgery.”
Finally, the doctor is sure that nutritional supplements containing carrots and blueberries are not effective at all.
“Carrots are full of vitamins, including fiber, so you should eat them, but they won’t help your eyesight. As for nutritional supplements, they have no scientifically proven effectiveness. Not to mention the color of blueberry tablets should be almost black: if it is a concentrate of the substance. However, we generally see a gray color in the packages, which means that there are relatively few blueberries in it,” he concluded.
