Dentist Luiza Avtandilyan, founder of the Smilestudio clinic, told socialbites.ca about the dangers of electronic cigarettes for dental and oral health.
“E-cigarette liquid contains the same nicotine, which negatively affects both general health and the condition of the oral cavity,” he said.
According to Avtandilyan, vaping is fraught with periodontitis (inflammation of the tissue around the teeth) and gingivitis (gum inflammation), as well as gum atrophy and recession.
The dentist claims that in addition to the gums, tooth enamel is also damaged:
“During electronic cigarette use, the production of saliva in the mouth, which serves as a natural protection for the teeth and gums, decreases, which causes the mucous membrane to dry out. As a result, tooth enamel becomes more vulnerable to pathogenic microorganisms (streptococci) that produce aggressive acids that weaken the protective properties of enamel.
He also noted that bad habits negatively affect the condition of the teeth.
“Molecules of auxiliary components contained in electronics – propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, dyes and flavorings – densely accumulate on the surface of tooth enamel, causing its demineralization, damage and thinning with the subsequent development of hypersensitivity, caries, tartar. and even tooth loss in the future. “It is worth noting that the ones” and “twos” (the frontal units on the lower teeth) are particularly affected,” Avtandilyan said.
The dentist added that the risk of getting cancer also increases.
“Under the influence of hot steam, irritation of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity occurs and trauma occurs to soft tissues, which significantly increases the risk of developing oral cancer,” the dentist emphasized.
