You should start by choosing a suitable place for the desk, arranging storage systems, and providing good lighting for the student’s workspace. Svetlana Kosareva, chief designer of the Hoff furniture and household goods hypermarket chain, told socialbites.ca.
The designer recommended placing the workspace in as much natural light as possible and choosing height-adjustable desks and chairs for younger students to “grow” with the child.
“You can place a long table along the window or replace the usual window sill with a wide tabletop and hide the shelves under it to store textbooks. This excellent and stylish solution is often used for small apartments in the Scandinavian style or minimalist style. Also pay attention to combining the beds with the work area, they will also help you save space,” he suggested.
Kosareva explained that the desk should be to the right of the window for right-handers and to the left for left-handers, so that the light falls on the work area and the shadow from the hand does not interfere with writing.
“Provide additional lighting to your work area in the evening by installing a height-adjustable desk lamp. If there is a computer on the table, the light source should be above the screen so that it does not glare,” he explained.
According to the designer, a storage system for textbooks and other school supplies should be thought out in advance.
“Shelves, chests of drawers, shelves are best placed at arm’s length from the workplace. And do not forget to provide a place to store it next to the desk so that the schoolbag does not roll on the floor. It can be a niche, a small shelf, even the most common hook,” said Kosareva.
The designer suggested placing a front panel above the desktop.
“This is an organizing board made of perforated metal or wood, on which various hooks, stationery containers, shelves and other storage devices can be attached,” he explained.
