You can apply a few simple tricks to spend less money on grocery shopping at supermarkets. Elena Sviridova, nutritionist for takeout, gave socialbites.ca advice on how to reduce food costs.

According to Sviridova, in order to save money, it is better to refuse to buy packaged products, especially hard cheeses and sausages.

“It is better to buy hard cheese and sausages by weight, and you can ask the seller to cut them. Packaged or plastic-wrapped products often cost unreasonably more. The same goes for seeds, dried fruits and nuts, for which the buyer pays 10-15% more for their packaging.”

The specialist also noted that when buying chickens it is better to prefer a whole bird.

“It’s more profitable than buying a whole chicken piece by piece. “You can cook fillets and thighs in the oven with a side dish and add wings to a light soup,” Sviridova said.

He said that milk and fermented milk drinks should have a short shelf life.

“Buy pasteurized with 1.5-2.5% fat in soft or cardboard bags. The expiration date should not be longer than one week. The same applies to fermented milk products: kefir, curdled milk and fermented baked milk, ”advised the nutritionist.

He added that you can save on groceries by refusing to buy quick breakfast.

“Don’t buy a quick breakfast: cereals, muesli, cereals are carbohydrates that raise blood sugar significantly. It is better to buy individual ingredients and cook healthy granola at home, ”advised the expert.

He explained that to make granola, you need to mix oatmeal, rice, buckwheat, wheat or other flakes with nuts, honey or Jerusalem artichoke syrup and bake this mixture in the oven.
