The elephants at the Houston Zoo keep in shape by practicing yoga every day. It has been reported New York Post.
All 12 elephants at the Houston Zoo begin each morning with “elephant yoga.” During training, zookeepers teach elephants to stand on their hind and forelimbs so that the animals can stay flexible. Each session lasts between 30 seconds and five minutes. Some older elephants do two sessions a day to keep their joints healthy.
The most “resilient” zoo staff calls the 40-year-old elephant named Tess, who weighs just under three tons.
“Tess is able to lift her huge body over her front paws and perform a number of other exercises. Zoo worker Kristen Windle is the most flexible and the only person to hold this stance,” said Kristen Windle.
According to Windle, “elephant yoga” sessions are optional, but each elephant receives treats such as fruit or bread for participation.
“If elephants don’t want to train or get tired, they can go. But they know they won’t get a reward if they leave,” Kristen Windle explained.
