This is the first time a woman has been elected as the head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This post was taken by Professor Celeste Saulo from Argentina, who previously served as Vice-President and has been Head of the Argentine Section since 2014. It has been reported Buenos Aires Times.
The members of the organization spoke in favor of Celeste Saulo being elected as the WMO president in a closed vote at the climate congress held in Geneva.
Celeste Saulo stated that after her election, the role of the WMO in the face of climate change has become more and more important.
“At a time when inequality and climate change are becoming the greatest global threat, WMO must do its part to improve meteorological and hydrological services and provide timely and effective service and warning systems to protect people and their economies,” he said.
He added that while priority is given to representatives of the most vulnerable groups, the organization plans to ensure that its members speak on equal terms.
Celeste Saulo is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires. He will replace Finnish meteorologist Petteri Taalas as Chairman of the WMO Secretary-General from 1 January 2024. He will manage the 193-member organization.
