Almost any tree can be grown on the balcony: for example, an apple tree, a Barbadian cherry, a mulberry and even a pomegranate. Maxim Suravegin, managing director of the OBI hypermarket chain, told socialbites.ca about this.
According to him, almost any fruit tree can be grown at home. But it is better to choose grafted slow-growing or stunted varieties.
From apple trees on the balcony “Crimean Aurora”, “Scarlet Sails”, “Salgirskoye”, “Tavria”, “Scythian”, “Ruby Duki” grow well. All these varieties ripen in autumn and winter with bright red delicious fruits.”
The specialist recommended planting an apple tree in the spring, using a 35-40 ml container as a pot.
“But remember that a tree needs pollinators and there aren’t many bees on the balcony, so usually a cutting of a pollinator variety is grafted onto the crown of a tree. This will provide partial pollination with the help of wind,” he said.
Another great option for the balcony, according to the expert, is the evergreen Barbados cherry: it is unpretentious and equally well tolerates both shade and direct sun.
“Bread is very simple: you just need to bury the prepared, washed stone in the ground and put it on the windowsill. A tree needs to be transplanted about once every 2-3 years, and to get fruits faster, you can feed it every month with mineral fertilizers. The fruits also have a very interesting taste, somewhat reminiscent of citrus,” he said.
Maxim Suravegin added that mulberries can also be grown on the balcony. The main thing is not to plant too large a plant, as it grows rapidly in the first years.
“The bush is picky about sunlight, so choose a bright place to grow, otherwise you will not wait for fruit to appear. Mulberry does not tolerate drafts, so do not leave it under the open window, ”warned.
Although the pomegranate is considered a southern and heat-loving tree, according to Suravegin, it can also be grown on the balcony, subject to various rules.
“Autumn, soak the seeds in water and put them in a cold place for the winter. In the spring, sow the seeds in moist soil, cover with a film, put in a warm place and put in the light when the first shoots appear. Pomegranate needs 8-10 hours of daylight, excessive drying is also not allowed, and during the dormant period it is better to provide the tree with a temperature of 12-14 degrees. Pomegranate easily tolerates pruning, so the tree is formed in the form of a compact bush or a short-stemmed plant, bears fruit on the shoots of this year. If you follow all the rules of care, the tree will certainly bear fruit. To accelerate the onset of fruiting, cuttings of the dwarf pomegranate variety should be grafted on it already at the age of one, ”explained.
