Producer A24 it’s been doing well in cinema for several years: in less than a decade it has garnered fifty Oscar nominations and has, in fact, already won. Best picture, a few figurines for ‘Moonlight’ in 2017 and ‘Everything at once everywhere’ this year. But his good nose for dramas cannot be underestimated: first he was ‘Ramy’ (with ‘Mo’ as a sister drama), then ‘Euphoria’ and now ‘Bronca’ is a kind of instant classic It will feature high in future Best of 2023 summaries.
Oddly enough, it is the first series created by. lee sungjin, South Korean screenwriter with experience in ‘Two Penniless Girl’, ‘Silicon Valley’ or ‘Dave’. Based on a seemingly mild anecdote, Lee manages to create a series. a place where you can spend an excellent time with agile as well as complex and intense nuances, but also black action comedy, catchy drama, chiaroscuro chronicle of the Asian-American experience, analysis of class anxieties and broken characters.
The fight in the title, which will be more of a pike, pits two characters who find themselves in different vital situations but overlap in their lives. anxiety about money matters and a dissatisfaction between the just and the irresolvable. On one side, Danny Cho (steven yeun), an independent contractor who is in the throes of depression, which he believes is to blame, in part as a result of his family’s forcible repatriation to Korea. To the other, Amy Liu (Ali Wong), a businesswoman with a Chinese father and Vietnamese mother, who is about to sell her houseplant business for ten million dollars. This would allow her to spend more time with her gorgeous husband George (Joseph Lee) and their perfect daughter June (Remy Holt) in her own perfectly remodeled home. But she doesn’t seem too happy about the possibility.
At the beginning of the series, Danny and Amy’s A car collision in a parking lot, first leading to a chase through the streets of Los Angeles and then a long-distance dive With interplay that becomes more and more unpredictable, and both, sometimes more directly than others, mingling members of their own families or people from their closest work environments, characters Lee knows how to relax into, a complex humanity.
Players are always equal. The double challenge proposed by Lee: shine in both the most physical action and strings of pure emotional purification (Yeun on her return to church, or Wong, who is trying to express her grief to the most unexpected person); being both a cartoon and the most fragile person in the world; Make the most sudden move, burst into laughter and beat us in the square with a subtle nuance.
