Some sweets are not only harmless, but also good for the teeth. Dentist Louise Avtandilyan, founder of the Smilestudio clinic, told socialbites.ca about this.
“Scientific research in recent years proves that natural chocolate, which does not contain sugar and other additives and contains a high percentage of cocoa powder, is not harmful, on the contrary, it is beneficial for healthy teeth and gums. The antioxidants and microelements that are part of cocoa can reduce the sensitivity of tooth enamel and inhibit bacterial growth in the oral cavity, and cocoa butter extract literally coats the teeth with a protective film like fluorine polish.”
According to him, there are also hazelnut bars among the desserts that are good for the teeth. “Microelements contained in hazelnuts – calcium and phosphorus – strengthen the hard tissues of the tooth. Chewing nuts contribute to the mechanical cleaning of dental units from plaque, and also gently massage the gums and improve blood circulation. The more hazelnuts in the composition, the less harmful the sweet mass in the dessert, ”said he.
Avtandilyan says you can use sweetener-based sweets without harming the teeth — xylitol, sorbitol, and stevia extract.
The same applies to natural marmalade. “To minimize the risk of tooth decay, it is recommended to choose a bland, sugar-free product based on natural juice or sweetener,” he said.
