The cast of the series The Last of Us didn’t turn out the way fans saw it. Bella Ramsey, who played Ellie, received the most criticism. Showrunner Craig Mazin recently gave an interview to SFX Magazine defending the young actress.
According to Mazin, the team had a hard time finding a girl to play Ellie due to the complexity of the role itself. During the casting, the showrunner saw more than 100 candidates, but he liked Bella Ramsey the most.
Ellie took longer to play because the part was more difficult to play. We’re trying to cast a 14-year-old girl, and it’s incredibly hard to play, right? Everyone can play badly, but not everyone has a brilliant acting game.
Kids don’t have much life experience. It is difficult to find children who can embody this role. Ellie has to be funny, but tough and cruel at the same time. She also has to make us believe that she has a connection with Joel.

Mazin was afraid for a while that Neil Drukmann would not let Ramsey go.
The only thing I was afraid of was seeing her audition for Neil. I was afraid that he wouldn’t like her performance and that I would have to live the rest of my life knowing that we didn’t have the best Ellie possible.
Fortunately, he fell in love with her. And we couldn’t have done more. She’s just the most amazing artist.
Next month, Bella Ramsey’s acting performance will be judged: the premiere will take place on January 15. The first episode lasts an hour and a half.
